Launched in the Spring of 2022, Islip Chess aims to be a local chess club for casual and serious scholastic players. We are an informal club. Beginners welcome.
Over time we hope to offer players a path to regular instruction, support for participation in scholastic chess tournaments, and help bring chess programming to Islip Schools.
The Islip Chess Club is now forming. Please take a moment to sign-up and we'll see you soon.
ChessKid.com provides a detailed curriculum for teaching scholastic and classroom chess and they keep the language simple to help meet the needs of educators looking to provide their chess club/class with a 21st-century skill-building environment.
FYI: These lesson plans align correctly with the Common Core State Standards implemented in schools for Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), but most of all they're just a great way to teach the game of chess.
Nope. We are not. We are simply Islip residents who have worked really hard to create an environment where our kids can play chess with other kids who also love the game.
Again, no. The chess boards, pieces, time, and support to make this club work are all donated by Islip residents and parents of Islip Chess kids.
Yes! Parents must remain on site in supervision of their children.
While we always bring several extra boards to loan out --- yes, bringing your own board and pieces is extremely helpful.
We are just starting out, but our hope is to meet at least twice a month and, eventually, weekly. Really, this will be decided by participation and enthusiasm amongst participants and parents.
In a month or two we hope to sell some t-shirts and other gear to off set the ancilary costs associated with running the club well (E.g. boards, clocks, etc.). If we do well, proceeds will be put towards either funding our own tournament(s) or facilitating scholastic tournament participation.
The preliminary findings of a multi-year study indicate that chess instruction may improve student performance, especially amongst younger students.
The study, conducted by researchers at Tennessee Tech and the University of Alabama, in conjunction with the Alabama Chess in Schools, released its findings last month.
Intrested in bringing a chess club to your town, library or school? We might be able to help you with that. We've run into many road blocks along the way and we'll do our best to help you avoid repeating them.
If you're interested in forming your own chess club reach out to us.
Founded in 2022, Islipchess.com is an informal chess club for Islip kids. We were founded after the pandemic so our kids would have other kids to play chess with. It's really that simple. In time we hope to help make chess instruction more accessible through live lectures and regular lessons with the many chess professionals we've met along the way.
